At the top right (if sitting on the bike) rear of the radiator, behind the thermostat (which is behind the plastic frame cover with the reflector on it) is the temp sensor. first thing I'd do is check the connections there as well as maybe give the wires into the gauge panel a little shake.
Probably just a loose wire somewhere.

Thanks, I'll look there and see

Depending on how cold it is where you are, it's possible that is normal.
Feel some hoses and see if they are getting warm.

I can ride for a half an hour and the needle will just come up off of full left, perhaps to the second line.

In that case, time to investigate. Did you check the coolant level in the overflow bottle? Is this bike new to you? Have you doen any maintenance on it yet, if so, what?

Like Hyper said, check the wire to the temp sensor first. And since you have two bikes, you could move the sensor from one to the other and see if the problem goes with it. If not, then the problem may be in your gauge.

ok, that's my plan, I'll swap it and see, and go from there, provided i don't find a loose wire/bad connection, thanks

prob found and fixed, sensor was fine, yellow wire to guage was grounded, funny though I thought that would have pegged the needle hot? all working well now, thanks to all
