If you are talking about the small storage compartment behind the rear passenger, that cover becomes detached with age. One handy trick is to place duct tape over the hinge area (inside the compartment), which prevents lose of cover when hinged cover breaks off. Unless someone just happens to have an old cover laying around, most replace the whole compartment.

Thanks wt and ohc for your reply. Guess there are weak points in any vehicle bodywork. Got into Datsun/Nissan Z cars some twenty years ago. Have a '83 zx turbo now. Amazing tech but some plastic features fail. Always wanted a VN750. Now I have a remarkable 7'300mi '97. All signs so far suggest it was a 'meant to be' deal. Just don't know the nuances of the bike yet. I learned the Z car the hard way and know it like a vet now. So this bike is a fresh exploration for me. At fitty seven I still have a open mind to learn.
