Went for a long ride today. At 137 miles, she started to miss and I switched it to RESERVE for the first time I've had her. She died, starved for fuel and I was immobile. Son brought a little gas, switched petcock to ON, finally got her started, and filled her up at the nearest station. Going down the road, decided to do a test and switched to RESERVE when the tank was full. Started to die, switched back to ON and she picked up again. Repeat with the same results. So it seems I have a problem with the petcock.

The PO had the tank lined and the tech who did it did a crummy job, as evidenced by all the crap embedded in the liner. I'm thinking the bozo failed to pull the petcock and Kreemed the lower end of the fuel screen. Will know more when I pull the petcock. If it has been gunked up with liner, what's the best stuff to remove it with? Can it be used to get the liner out of the tank? Or should I leave things alone and be sure to fill up before I go 120 miles?

Haven't used it yet, haven't had the time. But I do plan on using it soon. Depending on the condition of your tank after stripping away the old liner, it might be a good idea to go ahead and reline it with the better liner that come with the kit.

Hmmm. Wonder if my wife would notice her bottle of nail polish remover was low? Haven't pulled the petcock yet, but I believe someone posted that the filter screen, or part of it, was plastic. Don't think it would handle the acetone too well.

I believe if the petcock is clogged, you'll have to replace the whole thing.

Take the petcock out and use acetone or trimethylene chloride (paint stripper). Nasty stuff, both. If it were mine, I'd buy a better tank used or new.

Think I'll probably just remove the screen from the petcock. My inline filters ought to catch anything coming out of the tank.

A new tank really isn't an option. The bike is stock, almost showroom quality, and I want to keep it that way. New tank decals alone cost over $250, and I've yet to see a tank for sale that looks as good as mine. The PO was in no way mechanical, and whatever the stealership told him he needed he approved. I'm not convinced that the tank actually needed to be Kreemed. A good cleaning probably would have been sufficient. The tank was not cleaned prior to lining, as evidenced by the bits of crud embedded in the Kreem. Also, where the gas cap latch has worn away the Kreem, there is very light rust.

How can I remove old KREEM?

Acetone or methyl ethyl ketone (available at most paint stores) will re-dissolve Kreem. Fill about half full, seal the tank and leave for about 24 hours with periodic agitation. Drain into a container and inspect tank. If Kreem remains, pour solutions back into tank, reseal and repeat until all Kreem is removed.


Acetone is not as bad as everyone says.... I have worked with it for the last thirty ( yes 30 ) years. bare handed, it is an organic cleaner/degreaser. it will dry out your hands and point out any and every small cut you may have but that is it. ( like putting alcohol on an open wound )

As for the petcock. if it is plugged in the reserve side you can try to clean it or just price out a new/used one.

Yeah, no sense in screwing with it. I'd just replace the petcock itself. As for the Kreem, people seem to hate the stuff, but for me it was a life saver. All in the prepwork.

I have no real problems with the Kreem itself, just the way it was used by the clown who installed it. Insufficient tank prep, and failure to pull the petcock before using. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
