Guys,
After the installation of my Stator and regulator, I want to add a Voltage meter gauge and I have read many posts about connecting directly to the battery or connecting to the headlight bucket. I really like to go directly to the battery, so I can get the exact charge and voltage of the bike.

Do you have any suggestions on which wire I should tap into ? Also, I found a great post from a fellow Vulcan owner about relays below but one question.

If #86 is getting power from Headlight bucket, then do you still need power from battery terminal and FUSE going to #30 ?


# 86 would be the power supply from the headlight bucket, no switch is needed here, the lead acts like a switch. It is illistrated this way if you wanted to be able to kill the supply. (ex. L.E.D. lighting system or other accessory)
# 87 would be the + power lead to the meter. (middle lead don't beleive is used)
# 85 & 87 can share the same ground, just make sure it's a good one.
# 30 self explainatory!

Yes you do. #86 is used kind of like a on and off switch. When it gets power then it closes the circuit on 30 and 87 which is kind of like connecting two wires together. If you connect battery power to 86 then the relay will always be on and 30 and 87 will always be connected.

Very cool..... thanks so much for clearing this up! I'm going to order my Voltage meter next week just to keep an eye on the charging system.

When you say: # 85 & 87 can share the same ground, just make sure it's a good one.
I just want to make sure you mean that you're tying the ground of the relay and the ground of load supplied by pin 87 (voltage readout) together, not 85 and 87 directly. Sounds like you're on top of it, but you never know who might be reading. :)

Thanks so much. So, In simple terms I just need to make sure that 85 is connected to a good ground screw on the bike's frame and take 87 and connect it to the same screw or bolt on the frame of the bike, right?

85 to a ground screw.
87 to the positive lead of your voltage readout
negative lead of your voltage readout to the same ground screw as 85

87 can never connect directly to ground. It has to 'run' something with the current or the fuse will blow.
