Hello !

As soon as I turn on the bike it starts to rev and idle at 6k !
Went ahead and checked the idle adjustment knob and turned it all the way to the left. No dice


After some more digging I found that the throttle linkage lever that is supposed to stop against the idle adjusting screw is stuck at an ~15 degree angle. After starting the bike and moving the lever flat against the screw manually it idles properly.

Any advice in removing the gunk in the pictures from the throttle lever? If this is the wrong sub I'll post it in the right one !

I'd use some degreaser and an old tooth brush, you should be able to get that old crud off no problem

I just tried that and it looks sparkly clean now, but when the throttle is at rest it still stops at this angle.

Should I spray some lube on the whole mechanism? Is there a way to take it apart without removing the carbs?

I checked the two cables coming from the throttle and they both seem loose enough for operation. Any suggestions for the throttle lever? Cable lube and spray it on the spring or anything else?

I've also check the end of the throttle cable that is exposed before the lever and it is pretty dry.

they do need lube...but,when you move the lever does it move the cable and throttle grip back?might need to adjust cable or maybe cable is binding.

My testing is as follows,

Set the lever back to closed, where its supposed to be. I turn the throttle on the handle bar a quarter turn and let go. It flips back to normal resting position but the lever gets stuck as showed in the picture below.

As for your questions. As I manually push the lever back against the plate the throttle on the handle bar doesn't move since it has already snapped back to normal position.

I checked all parts of the cable for binding but it all moves freely with no obstructions.

then your having an issue with the lever on the carb itself.technically, though, if both cables are attached, the return cable should pull it back when you turn the throttle off,unless it is broken at the throttle assembly or out of adjustment. but I've run mine without the return cable for a while and it should still return without it,so something is binding up

Awesome, I'll try to do some adjustments to see if I can have the cable pull the lever back to the throttle plate. Just need to wait until NYC gets a warm front again :)

After spending the whole day pondering in the office, I decided to head to autozone for some carb cleaner/degreaser/seafoam and started testing the mechanism. When I turn the throttle on the handlebar the lever moves up and when it is stuck in that position I pulled the exposed throttle cable torwards the throttle plate and the lever moved on its own with no assistance. My conclusion is that the cable needs to be lubed since the gunk leftover on my hand was dry.

Question is which lube would best fit these cables and how would I remove the possible gunk inside the throttle tube?

Quick update,

I ran some lube across both cables and found out that the return cable had ripped in half and I removed it. After the lubing the lever sets back to normal ! Couple hours on a weekend with lube/seafoam got her back on the road !
