HI All,

Hoping someone can help me out. I am in the process of servicing balance dampers on an 85. Has a pretty significant knock, and I'm hoping this is the cause. Runs nice otherwise. I have the engine out and on the bench, left side cover (w/stator) removed, and am looking at what I believe to be the flywheel, with the balance shaft gear immediately beneath it. I found numerous references here indicating the balance gear bolt to be left hand thread, and have it cracked loose. However, I can't find a similar reference for the larger bolt in the flywheel, and I am also unsure looking at the manual. I am reluctant to just muscle it without knowing the correct direction. Any help from someone who has done this would be appreciated.

Additionally, I kinda hemming and hawing over whether to but the airbox back in or just go with filters attached to the carbs. Is is required to rejet the carbs in this process? I'm reluctant to get carried away here, as it runs really nice the way it is.

The rotor bolt is regular threads, right handed.

Didn't need to re-jet on my earshave, still has stock jets and the mixture (plug color) is fine.

Pay attention to the orientation of the balance gear on the weight. Largest post on the weight, goes into the smallest hole on the gear. You don't want to do it twice, like I did. It will fit different ways, regardless of the alignment marks, and it will shake like crazy if that orientation is wrong, even with the marks lined up.

Regarding the ear shave mod and rejetting, I got my bike with filter pods and the stock jets. It doesn't feel like it is running lean EXCEPT on the rare occasion where I hit a heavy head wind. I am guessing that the increased air pressure from the headwind leans out the mixture momentarily. Still haven't decided whether to rejet or not.

Have you checked to see where the vent hose is located? Wind on the vent can cause that.

Just my opinion.. Get rid of the air box and go to pods and coasters.) looks sooo much better without the stock air filters IMO and way easier to remove and mess with carbs.

I just used cheap plugs (5/8"? Instead of coasters) once the emissions junk was removed.

As far as re-jetting, every bike is different and you have to read your plug color. I needed to too but love the performance now (was majorly lean before).

Do you still have stock ACCTs on your '85? That might account for your noise. I had to rebuild, went MCCT and the engine still makes a loud racket compared to other engines IMO.

Hi Gidaeon,

Thanks for the info. I had already converted to MCCT's, which certainly quieted things down, and probably made the knocking more noticeable! It's easy to see how much easier the reinstall of the motor is going to be without the airbox, and definitely getting rid of the emissions hoses/valves as well. That arrangement made it soooo difficult to disconnect the carb cables and boots. Sheesh, what a design. Hopefully I will be more inclined to play with the carbs if needed once they aren't such a nightmare to access!

Thanks for your help guys. Balance dampers are indeed trashed. One missing entirely, the other 5 in various stages of "busted." No apparent internal damage to gears, case, etc. Should solve my knock! Odds of getting some riding in this summer just went up substantially!
