I'm still running the original Bridgestone Excedra's on my VN750.

But the bike is about to click past 10,000 miles, and they will need replacing soon.

So I was wondering if anyone would care to offer any latest opinions on what make/model of tires to go with--or even to stay away from?

Is there any make/model of motorcycle tire that does not fit properly with our back wheel/rim using the upgraded 170/80H15 tire size?

I know there are many posts here on this same general topic, but none seem to be very recent.

Also: if anyone would care to recommend a good online source (besides Ebay) for tire bargains, I'm sure everyone else (and moi) would appreciate that info, too....:smiley_th

I'm using the Pirelli MT66 tires. On the front I went for the little wider 110 vice 100. Did not try a 170 on the rear. When these tires wear out I plan to stay with the Pirelli MT66 and will try the 170 rear if it'll fit.

Side note: These tires use a higher psi than stock tires. If you ever take your bike to a shop you should tell them what psi you need so the person who does the normal checks does not lower your tire psi.

I'm currently running metzler ME880's and like em. Great grip when it's dry, good grip when it's wet. I have about 8k on them and probably have about 4-5k left on the rear (I'll replace late summer before the rainy season hits again). The front tire could probably last for most of the life of a second rear, but I like having matched pattern and wear on my tires, so I'll replace it at the same time.

When I replace, I'll either go with the 880's again or Avon's (supposed to be a tad bit better in the rain - which accounts for 6 months of my riding ;-))

Do be sure to take a look at the tires you get if ya get em locally and check the manufacture date (most manufacturers have information on their site on how to do this). I was a little irked when I checked the date on my tires after buying them (cyclegear) and one was 2 years the other 3 years old - rubber dries out as it ages.

Avon's are awesome tires! I've used them for years on all of my bikes. Don't have any yet on this one since I just got it but will use them when needed. :smiley_th

I have Avon Venoms. Love them. Couldn't tell you how they handle in the rain because I don't ride in the rain....

Now before anyone chastises me for using cheap tires, I know there are better products available. IRC's are a good performer for the bucks invested and I've never had a problem with them - on several bikes -. About $110 a matched set F & R.

Damn... wish I could pay that much for a set of tires.

If the tires fit your riding style and you've tested braking/ swerving abilities in the worst conditions ya ride in and are fine with the results - then the tires are fine for ya.

Me... I like to push the limits and at least around this part of Oregon - the one requirement for a drivers license appears to be a lobotomy:doh:. So I'm stupid (think I can ride better than I can)... they're stupid (cant drive too well even before the coffee, magazine, texting, and looking at porn on the laptop)... and there's only 2 tires between the road and I - so I choose to buy expensive tires even though I can't afford em.

Near the end of summer expect a review on Avons. I'll wear out the rear (I payed too much for the tires so I gotta wear em out right? - Much safer than replacing sh%tty tires earlier on right?:motorcycl) and then probably give the avons a shot. I've heard good and bad about the metzlers (I like em), but nothing but good about the avons.... too bad they're so %%%%'ing expensive...

DT: What kind of mileage are you getting out of those IRC tires?Wear that is..Thanks ..Amsoil man

I'm running a Dunlop 491 on the rear and a Maxxis on the front. No problems with either tire so far.
The rear is much older but still looks like new and has about 12000 on it. The front has about 3000.

I have the MEtzler ME 880's front and rear, I have over 10k on them and they still look great.
I upgraded to a 110 on the front and it helped in the handiling.
I will replace them with Metzlers when I need new tires, I got them installed for $300 for the pair, I also replaced the rear stem with a 90 degree angle and helpes checking and filling tire.

I went with the Dunlop D404's (stock sizes) as they were highly recommended on the forum and I run them on my VTX1800 with no problems and good service (I replace them about every 9k as i ride it hard). Had my delivered to my door from Competition Accessories for $162.97 for the set and am going to have them mounted/balanced at a local shop. Hope this helps and good luck.

Well, if I didn't want to pay alot for a premium tire, I would just get another set of Bridgestone Excedra's. They are a good tire, you know their limits, and know about how many miles you will get out of them.

There is no rule you can;t just stick with the stock tire if you want to....

I just replaced both tires and went with OEM Exedras again. I had 13.5K on them and the tread looked like it could go another season or two but I got a nail in the rear so I figured it was time for new tires. Got them from Dennis Kirk, less than $180 total.

I'm not an aggressive rider and the OEMs worked fine for me so I didn't feel like experimenting with another brand.

i run kenda's , the best tires i have ever had , they are good in the rain and because of the deep groves they are good in dirt too , i think i paid $120. f/r shipped --- :rockon:
