Hello everyone,

I purchased a 93 VN750 about a year ago that hadn't run in about 3 years. Needless to say I have been working on it ever since. I am new to working on bikes so I have been reading everything I can find about these bikes.

My current problem, when I go on a long ride and stop I am not able to get my bike started again because the battery is low. I replaced the battery but still have the problem. I believe it is the stator so I am going to replace it.

My question is what other preventive repairs should I consider doing since I have the motor disassembled??? I would rather do it now rather than disassemble it again.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well, I'll post the most often asked question on the board.....
Did you replace the battery with a maintenance free one?
Also, did ya check the rectifier/regulator?
There are some more experienced in the electrical aspects of our bike that I'm sure will post soon, so check back and until then, read the Vulcan Verses !!

Yes, please make sure the battery is Maintenance Free. Wet cell batteries will fit in our bike, but they aren't designed for our bike. The usual symptom of the bad battery is that you cannot start the bike after it has been driven a little ways. It may crank just fine, but it won't start. If you push start it, it will fire right up.

What brand and kind of battery do you have?

if you are going to keep the bike and pull the engine, you may want to consider a TOC Stator cover (www.tocmanufacturing.com )

I have a toc mod and love it...

Follow the testing diagrams in the vulcan versus first. While your in there you may wanna deal with the acct's.

The ACCTs will be an issue if the bike has sat for a long period of time. It seems that the plunger get "set" in a position and the springs don't have the tension to overcome the set position. If left unadjusted, you may end up with the damage my 93 sustained with the chains chafing away at the outer head walls putting metal shavings into the oil and damaging other parts of the engine.
Try the "grambo" trick which should help the springs overcome the set position and hopefully loosen the ACCTs up so that they will function normally again.

Thanks for recommending the "verses". I have been reading for the last 2 hours and still haven't read all I wanted to.

I have a standard battery but I will be changing this out after reading the "verses".

I have already replaced both ACCT's with new ones from the dealer. Wasn't sure what they were at first but figured it out reading the "verses".

I like the mod but I don't think I will be able to afford it unless I put off making the repairs until later this winter. I was hoping to continue riding until October/November. Based on what I have been reading, it sounds like it might be worth it to save my $$ for the mod.

I will check the R/R before I start in on the stator to make sure I am not barking up the wrong tree.

I appreciate all the advice. It was what I was hoping for.

I will be checking in again so those who have more to contribute please don't hesitate.
