I have a problem starting my VN750. Whenever I press the start button the starter motor turns over very slowly. If I keep pressing the rear brake cable gets very hot with quite a lot of smoke coming from the front end of the cable where it connects to the pedal linkage. The clutch cable also starts to get warm up at the handlebar adjuster.

I’m guessing that there is a direct short circuit to ground when the start button is pressed and for some reason this current is passing through the brake and clutch cables.

Has anybody else experienced this problem?

sounds like a bad ground to me. follow your ground cable from the battery all the way to the point where it attaches to the engine. the cable is probably loose or broken or possibly someone may have attached it somewhere other than the engine. if the ground cable is loose or broken the starter tries to ground through anything attached to the engine . if that is the problem you will probablt find the bike runs better because the spark plugs are grounded through the engine by the ground cable

Problem solved, was in fact the engine ground cable top end where it connects to the battery box and frame. The bolt threads were covered in corrosion. Cleaned the bolt, cleaned the bolt hole, and scraped a little paint to make a really good connection. Took the resistance from engine block to neg terminal down from 2.5ohms to less than 0.5ohm.

Any smoke, other than out the exhaust, when trying to start the bike isn't good.
