I have a 86 vulcan. 2 wks after I bought it the speedo cable broke. I bought a new one. 2 wks later the speedo stopped working again.

But the cable isn't broke this time. If I use my fingers to turn the metal cable, near the wheel end, the speed will change on the gage.

But If I screw it back into the hole near the wheel, then speed won't change on the speedometer. I hope I have it installed right. The end near the wheel has a round end with a slot in it. The end that goes in the speedo has a square end. The cable ends are not worn or broken.

Might be the gear inside the wheel unit is stripped.
Easiest thing to do may be to find a replacement on eBay, unless someone here has one to get rid of.
The highlighted one in the pic, or maybe the one above it.
