I'm going to install the Progressive Suspension fork lowering kit. It looks like I have to remove the forks to get at the damper spring. So, since I have to remove the forks anyway, should I replace the oil/dust seals?
There are no leaks, and the dust seals don't look cracked or damaged at all. The bike is a 92 with 24,000 miles on it. I have owned it for about 3 years, and have never changed the seals. On one hand it's a preventative maintenance issue, on the other "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I don't see why you should have to remove the forks to fish out the springs. If it was me, I would just change the oil while the tops are open. The oil is going to be in quite a bad shape by now if it has never been changed.

He has to get to the dampaning springs. That is why he has to take them completly appart. I took a short cut and did not install the dampeners. I am not very heavy so it worked out fine for me.

BTW, I would replace the oil seal and the dust covers.

I agree...if you have to take the fork apart, you might as well change the seals. They are not expensive, and considering the age of the bike, it simply can't hurt.

There was someone awhile back that opted not to replace the seals...and about a month later one of them started leaking...(Damn you Murphy!!!)

I would suggest you get the OEM seals and not some e-bay knock offs.

And don't forget to read Lances write up on replacing the fork seals at the top of this section.

I looked for OEM seals online, but I'm not sure if they come in pairs or if I have to order two of them.... for example, on cheapcycleparts.com they show an exploded view of the fork and shows that you need two of them and the price is around $14. I'm not sure if that is $14/ea., or for the pair.....

Anybody have a prefered vendor w/part #'s ??

I opted for the oem seals. Check bikebandit.com or even ronayers.com Both are good resources. Pricing is listed on each site. I don't remember it being expensive at all.

I won`t argue with anyone who recommends OEM seals, but I bought these a year or so ago.

From the limited research I did on fork seals, I believe at a minimum you want to get seals made of rubber, not neoprene. The rubber is more robust and wear resistant. Both the Kawi, and the Pyramid brand seals in the ebay link are made of rubber. The Ron Ayers prices for OEM parts look pretty good to me. My local stealership wanted about $60 for a complete set of 2 each, oil and dust seals. I got mine for $20 plus $5 shipping.
