Leaving work today I got off my 94 to lock the gate--as i shifted into neutral the shift pedal traveled about 2 inches farther down! it was in neutral so I locked gate and used my toe to raise the lever. I found I could shift through the gears but also had a vibration--After getting it in 5th I found-to my dismay that I could not downshift:( Fortunately I live in a small rural area so I timed the 2 lights and slipped some clutch but I make the 10 miles home. There was no advanced notice to this issue--rode smooth to work this morning and shifted ok --Any ideas what to look for and what am I in for???

I have been reading up on shifter issues here and things don't look good but I checked the side to side play of the shaft and very little play (less than 1/8 inch)

Are you sure the shift lever isn't just spinning on the shaft?
Maybe the bolt holding it to the shaft is just loose? Atleast let's hope it that simple a fix!

checked the shift lever for tightness --it is tight - looks like a Clymer manual for me. It I have to tear down engine-what other recommendations to do while open-engine has 23K on it

here is another option. Do any members in the southeast work on bikes on the side or professionally? My employer has layed off several of our crew and the workload is heavy-extra Saturdays-2 hours mandatory ot per night etc. I think I could do this job but sometimes it may be less aggravation to farm out the work to someone who could use some $$$$. Also I probably wont have the time/energy to attack it anytime soon. I was looking at the posts and "lance" is within range to me in N. Florida--Without insulting anyone are any recommendations out there
