Well I have an 85 VN 700.. The top of the forks are rusty and I was wandering if I can sand and paint them. Or do I have to replace the frorks all together.. It is pitting.

How far up? If it is not within the travel area then you don't need to worry about pitting. A pic is worth 1000 words though. Got any of the area?

Well.... The rust isnt as far down to hit the travel path. It is more an eyesore and dosent really hinder anything. I was just wondering if it would be ok to sand and paint. I dont know if if it would hurt anything if I did..

tim, go to the Wheels, Suspension and Brakes Forum, and look down to capHAB`s thread on polishing the bottom of his forks. He gives quite a bit of info on how he sanded and polished them up. Most of it should be applicable to cleaning up the top too, whether you want to paint or wax it up. Good luck with the project.

My vn700 forks were like that, I removed them and cleaned with 0000 steel wool and chrome cleaner. :beerchug:
