What would happen if I got a 30 amp-hr battery like Hizzo's and ran a bit too many accessories, pulling 3 amps per hr more than the stator can deliver. Would the extra current by pulled from the battery?

Would the battery be able to re-start the bike if I had drained 1/4 of the battery?

And, say I ran that way until I had used up 1/4 or a 1/3 of the battery - and then put it on a charger to be at full charge for the next day.

I figure I'd probably go through batteries faster - but I'm not sure how fast.

Could this adversely affect the stator?

Isn't this what happens anyway (to a lesser degree) if you get stuck in bumper to bumper traffic and are idling for long periods of time?

I have a 50W amp and I'd like to add 2 20W driving lights - but that would exceed the stator output so I was wondering if this would be an option.

u could do that, but keep in mind that the battery has a set charging rate. i think for this its less then an amp per hour. that means you need to place on charge for that long, plus some. I wouldnt recomend that (wouldnt do damage, just you may go over the 50% mark then who knows.)... try cutting some juice by going led tail light... that will help. You may also wanna chack out the frankenstator project as well.

Side note... did you factor in the total draw at idle? how many amps will you be draining then? oh and stator would be fine.

Hey Hizzo, Thanks for the reply. I may end up trying it. I'd really like to add the driving lights. I'd be able to manually cut the lights and amp on and off depending on how my voltmeter looked, so I don't think the excess drain would be too bad during a typical ride.

I've been watching your stator rewind and I may be interested in going that route some day. Right now, I'm hoping to get many more years from mine.

I'd really like to put that big battery in but I haven't looked into what it would take to construct a box. I know nothing about bending sheet metal.

if you put a switch on, and also put in led tail light, you may be able to pull it off without any damage at all (just watch your idle drain, and also find out what the total draw from the amp is, cause 50w is the output). happy riding....

the box wasnt that hard to make, i just took the battery and bent the metal around it leaving about 1/8->1/4 an inch for the rivet heads and to slide the battery in and out. if you want, PM me, and i will draw on a peice of paper the cut out (i dont have the measurements, so you will have to scale it.)
