Have an 02 750. Just ordered and received 3 Hiflofiltro filters off of e bay. Seller advised for 86-02. The one that was on the engine was a Hiflofiltro HF 303. The ones I received are substantially larger and marked HF 202. I tried one on the engine and it seems to match up and looks like it would seal O.K. Anyone out there running this filter? Any input would be helpful.

I use Emgo filters, there are 2 different sizes that fit, and both work fine. One is bigger than the other. I don't know what Kawasaki's reason was for changing the recommended filter was, they did not make any changes to the engine. I can't even remember which came first, the small one or the big one. My recently sold EX500 Ninja used the same filters, and could use either one also. The 202 should be fine. Just make sure when you change the oil and start it up, get down and look at the sight glass. The oil level should completely drop out of sight within a couple of seconds. If it does, you are ok.


Can't let a post about oil filters go by without my requisite warning about Fram filters. Please do not use them. They are junk. Many engines have been destroyed by them, and I have first hand knowledge of a couple of Fram filters on cars/trucks. Even if they don't fail and fry your engine, they are a damn poor quality filter. Do some research on them.

Every single car, truck, and motorcycle forum I belong to (over 20 altogether) has warnings posted about Fram filters. Use at your own risk.

I am going to have to agree with Jerry on this one ,Fram filters are not near the quality product they used to be,If the filter fits Physically and it adds more filter area which would be a good thing.My only concern is whether or not the internal bypass would be equal to the oem filter,I have never used Hiflow brand but have heard some good things about them.

Kawasaki has two different part numbers for Vulcan 750 oil filters, based on model years. But either filter will work fine on any year. If the filter you have cross references with either Kawasaki filter, you are ok, other than Fram.

The 202 are the earlier years, 303 are the newer.

I have an 86 so I kept with the stock size of 202. I went K&N simply for the nut at the end for easy removal later, and that it is probably a decent filter, but most likely nothing special.

A good tip I read here was to pre-fill my filter when I did my oil change - my oil pressure light went off instantly when the bike was started up the first time. It seems to prevent that bubble from forming and having to loosen the oil filter for a second whilst the engine is running to clear the oil pressure light.

I have prefilled some vertical filters on cars, but you can only partially prefill the filter on the Vulcan, because it is vertical. Also, I don't like making a mess, and Kawasaki put the starter right in the way. When I remove the oil filter, I cut a piece of cardboard (like a folder is made out of) to fit under the filter mounting boss, and run the other end down into the drain pan, basically forming a cardboard chute to keep oil from running down behind the starter. My oil pressure light goes out almost instantly. I always refill it right after draining it, so all the internal engine parts are still coated with oil.

When doing the pre-fill just fill it to the top once, let it sit a minute or two. I added a 1/2 fill after that and let it sit. I didn't have any run out, but I had a tin-foil chute in place in case of drips.

There is a documented issue that Kaw released service bulletin about to their stealerships. Sometimes it gets an air bubble, and the oil light will not go out. Their suggested fix is to, while the engine is running, loosen the oil filter to where some oil may drip. The oil light will turn off and re-tighten. It seems rare from what I've seen, but better safe than sorry.

This air bubble in the filter after an oil change has been often discussed here.
Loosening the filter to release the air is referred to as burping the baby. :)
