Have a 86 750 which has had an extended period off road and rebuild.
Just got to the stage of restarting and have ignition light and neutral switch working. Run switch on (but not tested). Sidestand switch broken(if not replacing do wires need to be joined or apart?) When starter button pushed there is no activity at all. I have a Haynes Manual and am pretty strong on mechanicals but to be honest electrical work is like witchcraft to me. Any help appreciated to get this cool wee bike back on New Zealand roads.

Side stand switch wires need to be connected to have the bike think it is up and ready to ride. For your best chance at starting without digging into the wiring, put the bike in neutral and pull the clutch lever. If the bike thinks that you're trying to start while torque can get to the wheels, it won't start, and it will kill the engine if you try to send torque to the wheels with the kickstand down.
Look up the 'two wire mod' which may help you by bypassing a potentially faulty starter relay in the junction box.
