I just bought a '93 750 from someone who bought it from another person who had transmission problems. What I got second hand from the guy I got it from is that the previous owner was riding it, stopped and then it wouldn't go into any gear. They pulled the engine and started to tear it down and stopped then sold it to the guy I got it from. I'm getting ready to tear the engine down and do a rebuild. What things should I look for in the transmission? Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like PO may have made an unnecessary mess of things. When mine did that it was because the C-shaped spring on the ratchet mechanism under the left panel with the oil sight window had gotten too weak to do its job.

Mine did the same thing and it was the mechanizm on the end of the shift lever (shifting drum?) came apart or bent. This was before I started doing the work myself and the guy said he just put it back together and the cover back on. Never had to get into the clutches or trans.

Is there any way to check the function of the transmission with the engine out?
