Ive been looking at all of the posts on the pick up coil mod and I just can't seem to see what it is I am supposed to alter so we can get the smaller gap or, for that matter, which way the gap is. I need some help on this one

do a thread search for pick up coil clearance pics posted by abyssdncr
and when you do the mod make sure you bring the rotor around where you are gaping the pickup at the contact plate otherwise your gap will be way too shallow and you will knock the ends off of the pickup

ok...I'll try to explain it quickly for ya....

in the 3rd photo you can see the 2 pickups mounted at 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock. if you turn the engine by hand by using a socket wrench in the middle of the drum, you will see a metallic piece rotate around and come very close to the pickup coils.

If you align the coil with the plate as it rotates...that is the gap you are checking and re-setting.

The drawing shows how each mounting plate is modified to get the pickup closer to the moving "plate" as it passes them. The drawing is showing that you need to elongate the holes in the plate AND file the flat part of the plate (on both ends of each plate) to allow the gap to become smaller.

his drawing is only showing the top part of the plate as modified, but you need to do the same to both holes and ends of each plate.....for both pickups.

I hope this helps.

OK.. ive had to give up on the mod right now as the screws that hold the pickups will not break loose.. Can any kind of break-free be used there??

If the screwdriver you are using has the steel blade/shaft extend the full length of the handle, you can give it a good tap or three with a hammer to try to break the thread lock on the screws so they can be turned out. Kind of a poor man`s impact driver. :)

Don`t hammer on a plastic screwdriver handle though, as you will just break it.

yes it can, but doubt it will work, when steel rusts into aluminum, it kind of welds the two metals together. Hit the Impact driver harder while gripping the impact driver with a steady CCW pressure. The screws will break loose.

this is one of the very few times I will say to use a bigger hammer and more force. 9 X's out of 10, i won't even pull the hammer out of the drawer.
