I have a significant amount of oil spatter on the rear hub coming from the final drive; see attached pic. This is after about 400 miles of riding since the last wash. Any ideas as to what to check to correct this?

I just recently bought the bike and have no record of the last service of the final drive. Bike is now at about 32000 on the odo.

Bad O-ring and/or seal. Don't run it without filling with gear oil, just up to the female threads in the filler hole with the bike on center-stand.

Probably need to disassemble the whole thing, check spline lubrication, replace various O-rings, defective parts and clean brakes.

x2 - Yep, looks like a seal.

edit: You also can get that on the wheel if you use too much grease on the wheel splines. Where the wheel hub splines to the final drive, not the driveshaft splines.

yea, excess grease on them splines will do that.. ask me how I know..

it takes a very very thin layer of grease on them to be good. Unlike the driveshaft splines which like a lot

Thanks for the info, guys. Checking the splines is on my list too. What's the general consensus on the best brand/source/type of gear oil to use?

A bad seal will cause that, but so will too much grease on the splines (the ones that mesh with the rear wheel) will to. I used to use Kawasaki shaft drive oil, but I don't think Kawasaki makes shaft drive bikes anymore. When you said wash, I hope you didn't mean pressure wash. That will destroy seals quickly. I recently bought a 1997 with 21,000 miles on it. The back wheel was filthy. But none of it looked recent, The final drive was full of decent looking oil, and both the wheel and driveshaft splines have grease on them. Oh, there is also a small vent hole on the inside of the final drive unit behind the wheel. If you seriously overfill the final drive, oil can come out through that.
