I seem to be in need of help otherwise I wouldnt be here obviously. My 2002 Vulcan 750 seems to have a decent oil leak going on. I see oil from the front of the engine. Also, now it is backfiring and spitting when I ride it. (like a compression problem). I would like to try to fix this myself, as I am on disability and have a limited income and the motorcycle repair place was quoting me like $500-800. I simply cant afford that. Can anyone knowledgeable please tell me where to start. I cant seem to find anything relevant on google. Please reply to my email, in case I dont get back on this site. [email protected] Thanks in advance.

Is there any oil in the deep spark plug tube for the front cylinder?

There's an o-ring on the plug tube, if it leaks, there's a weep hole at the bottom of the cylinder to drain the plug tube. Front cylinder weep hole is up front, down low on the cylinder, hole almost pencil sized. A bit above and to one side of the oil filter.

Rear axle nut is the right size to use in removing the plug tube.

Sorry, can't reply to the email address until we know you're not a spammer. ;)

Wib has a post here with better pics I think. Found Wib's post, Kanuck may have one too, more pics here: http://www.vn750.com/forum/31-engine-exhaust-cooling/57417-oil-leak-another-common-issue-2.html

Spitting and sneezing may be a lean condition, sticky valves, or valve timing variation due to loose ACCTs. Is it ticking?

is the oil on the front of the engine on left side or right side (as your sitting on it).

left side, definately check out the weep hole (see above).
right side, look at the front of the seam between the right side engine cover and the crank case. there is a gasket there, it can leak there (I know). Also, there is an o-ring seal on the snout of the starter that can leak as well
