I've been using these converted ACCT's for many years w/o any issues. 10-24 set screw holds the inner shaft from backing out. Simple, cheap, works. Can be done safely with hand tools. 55k+ miles on the bike, now my son is riding it as I spend most of my time on my 83 wing.

Good idea.

I'm guessing it depends on the spring working properly to get the initial tension before locking it down?

No spring. Adjust like a MCCT, then lock down the set screw. Simple and effective.

How do you set the tension? The set screw is all you added, right?

I think you can tension the stock one with a screwdriver, through the end cap.
