I have a 1987 vulcan and recently rebuilt the carb with new jets and o rings before the rebuild my bike was back firing making a loud bang before it would start I assumed my problem was the pilot jet but now I'm thinking I might have another problem because it still does it on the first start and now it wont move when I put it in gear to drive any ideas or suggestions on what to do next?

Loud backfiring when trying to start this bike is a classic sign of a weak battery, many including myself have gone with AGM type batteries as they are much as far as it not engaging into gear, the simple thing that comes to mind is the clutch adjustment. Have you verified that’s lined up
