Just purchased a 91 Vulcan with 10,150 miles on it. Haven't had a bike in about 5 years so this is a great bike to learn on again. Motor runs strong and feels like its got a lot of life in it. Just hate that I bought it right at the beginning of winter, gotta find the warmest days to ride. I already changed the oil to the Shell Rotello T. The drain plug beside the kick stand has been worn down so I have to find a way to loosen it up, thought about getting one of those gator wrenches and see if that works. Any ideas? I was able to drain it from the bottom to change the oil but I know that there is a screen that needs to be cleaned. I thought my next project would be to drain the coolant and change it out. Is the Wal-Mart brand of coolant alright to use? Any other things that would need to be done? I might need a new tire on the front at some point, hopefully I can take that off myself and take it in to a tire shop. I have already gotten some great info on here about tires and other things. Great community hope to enjoy my new cycle and thanks for all the help.

Certain anti freeze is not good I've read though I can't remember just now which. Probably in the Verses. Welcome aboard and yes I'm sure you'll have very little trouble removing the wheel for tire replacement. Great group here. Don't forget to lube the driveshaft splines.

Welcome to the group. I learned a few years ago that there are only a couple of antifreeze (ethylene glycol) manufacturers in the U.S. Their products are sold under different brand names for widely varying prices. I buy the cheapest antifreeze that says it is safe for aluminum. IMO, the biggest rip off in antifreeze these days is "premixed" 50/50 antifreeze. You pay almost as much for this stuff as you do pure antifreeze! All it takes to make a 50/50 mix is a container, antifreeze, and distilled water.

Always use distilled water to mix with antifreeze to make coolant for your bike.

You might pick up a replacement side drain plug on ebay or at a dealer. Remember not to overtighten the steel plug into the aluminum housing.

Take the left side oil drain plug into an automotive parts store and see if they have a universal self tapping replacement plug that will fit.

Welcome Jason! Glad to welcome yet another motorcycle enthusiast with excellent taste! Lots of good people and lots of good info here so have at it!

And Hoss, we all know the 93's have the fastest colors. The 2 tone blue will take you in a quarter mile then go have a quiet lunch. :p

I would love to connect with some local riders. I was hoping I could learn how to lube the spline from someone that has done it before. I have a limited knowledge of mechanics but given the insight I think I can figure it out.

The spline lube link in fergy's signature is complete with pictures. If you can't find someone, you should still be able to do it. If you run into problems, the forum is always here!

Hi Jason!

Now there seems to be 3 or 4 of us here in the area.

I bought a '02 this summer. Had to clean up the r/r and relocate it from battery acid (no drain tube) spilling down.

Only other thing I've done so far is to add a volt meter.

Harbor Freight item 46972-3VGA $3.99

Cheap, but works.

I would be glad to help with anything I can. Two heads are better than one, sometimes.
