Hey, guys! I went out and bought a 2003 750 the other day (my first bike, period). The only thing is that it's been sitting for about a year. From reading around, I gather that if the bike has been sitting, I should change all the "fluids". Can someone tell me which fluids have to be changed, exactly? Also, can you link me to something that it should be changed with? I know squat about motorcycle maintenance but would like to start off on the right foot.

Thanks a bunch guys, I love this site.

P.S. I read some things in the Vulcan Verses about changing fluids, too, but I'm still not entirely sure what, exactly, will need catering to.

P.S.S. I checked to see if the battery is a MF, and it seems to be. There's a sticker on top saying something like "this is a sealed battery, no water needs to be added" or something to that effect. I'm guessing this is a MF, right?

You are correct that is a MF batt.
I would start with adding some seafoan to the tank, Change the oil, make sure you use good oil. If it says Friction modifiers or Evergy conserving DON"T USE IT.
That is bad for our wet clutches.
Check your drive splines and change the diff fluid, it is Gear Lube 75W90 will work fine.
Check your Brake fluid and see if it is clear or brown, should be clear.

Finaley the Coolent would not be a bad thing to do.

Thanks for the info, Ccspinner. What's a good oil that anyone here could recommend? Should I go synthetic?

As far as coolant goes, does it take anything special?

Like I said, my knowledge on motorcycle, and automotive maintenance in general, is pretty limited, so I really appreciate the words of wisdom.

When it comes to dino or synthetic, it's pretty much a preference thing. I'm using Shell Rottela T 15W40 and noticed smoother shifting than the 10W40 Kaw oil. You will need a little less than 4 qts. Make sure the bike is on the center stand when filling the oil. DO NOT OVERFILL. The oil level should be between the high and low marks on the sight glass.
I'm also using a Bosch 3323 filter. A little longer than the Kaw filter. I can't remember what I paid for the Kaw filter, the Bosch was $5.

Got it. I'll try to get this all done over the weekend. Thanks again guys!

I noticed one other thing. I was sitting on the bike before while it was off and on the centerstand when i noticed that the clutch had about an inch of play in it before it would tense up and feel like it was actually doing something. Is there anything I should check/do?

According to the shop manual, there should be 2-3 mm (.078-.118 in) of play.
If those numbers are confusing to ya, it should be a little less than 1/8 of an inch.
If the adjusters are tightened all the way, ya may need a new clutch cable.
Take a look where the cable goes into the hand lever also, to check for any fraying.
But on an '03, the cable should still be good.

btw, when I said inch, I meant at the end of the handle. At the base of the handle, it has, maybe, 10mm play.

Fixed the clutch handle. I just needed to fiddle with the adjuster a little and it's good now. I took it out for the first time today, riding up and down the block not going above 1st gear and it was a blast. This bike is so damn easy to ride. I never rode before but I had no problem with balancing or anything. I just need to work on my clutch control since I stalled it a couple of times releasing the clutch too fast going from neutral to 1st. It also stops very nicely. I used a lot of the knowledge I've gained from reading this site practically 24/7, and did pretty damn good for a first timer. I'm still taking the MSF BRC of course, I just wanted to get my feet wet before diving in.

Ya got that right, John... The Vulcan is really easy to handle, but be sure to never take that for granted!
As the saying goes, "Always expect the unexpected". (but the part they always leave out goes... "But have fun"!)

And stalling is all part of riding.
(Don't tell anyone, but I was the first one to stall my bike at our Pot-Luck Jamboree :doh:)

On the oil and coolant thing... I use Lucas motorcycle synth 20-50 in the summer. It increased the mpg (62-64mpg) and smoothed out an abused engine. With coolant, a mom and pop bike shop owner in town - who had nothing to gain by advising this said we should be running motorcycle coolant to lube the water pumps and maintain seals. He recommend Honda coolant. Honda moly for the splines too.

Man, and I just bought 4 quarts of 10-40 synthetic and regular automotive coolant. I'm gonna have to locate a nearby honda dealer and get some spline lube and coolant this weekend.
