Alright, so... My '04 with about 4600 miles had been running pretty bad for the past few months (stumbling down low, missing power up high). Lately it wouldn't run at all unless the choke was on.

I haven't ridden it much for the past year or so. A mechanic told me the carbs were probably gummed up due to the old fuel. I took off the carbs (almost made my car's engine swap seem like a cake-walk!) and sure enough, the bowls were full of green crud. I removed the jets and the mains were filthy - almost completely green! Float area was nice and clean though. I cleaned everything else up pretty well I think.

Now, I was thinking... I decided to order parts to do the ear shave and coasters. I wanted to reinstall the carbs as is and make sure the bike runs and then remove them again to jet them for the shave. Its basically double the work... Should I just leave them off and reinstall them when I do the shave?

A part of me is worried that after the shave it may not run and I won't know if it has something to do with the shave or another carb problem (sync, varnish, etc) :doh:

Pulling and installing the carbs gets easier each time you do it, if that's any consolation. lol I'd put 'em back in and make sure the bike's running fine, then pull them for the coastering. Once you've shaved and coastered, you'll have the airbox out of there and reinstalling the carbs will be a snap.
