Hate to say but, looks like chunks of rod bearing material. That gold color, if I'm seeing it right..

Curious about those long strands though.

I was really hoping you wouldn't say that, but it's my guess as well. Can't think of anything else but a bearing. Sounds like I'm headed all the way to the crank. Yes, they're definitely gold colored. Seems to have come apart in fairly large pieces too.

Clutch material can be gold, but usually has some dark mixed in, and is usually a lot smaller chunks.

Looks like a hammered bearing. That stinks.

Making some progress. Still a fair number of things to remove, but at least the heads, chains, cylinders, and clutch are out of the way. There's definitely some obscene lateral play in the front connecting rod. Guess I'll be sourcing a used crank and rods.

And it's official. Heard back from the machine shop today that the crank is not repairable.

There's one on eBay for $200. I may go ahead and order that today. At this point I'd prefer to toss in a used/running engine, but nothing's turning up locally.

Caleb, you might watch that auction and keep looking around, should be able to find one for less. I'm just a bargain hunter, time is more valuable than money for some, I know.

A couple of you guys are really getting your feet wet on the VN. I've built car engines, bikes, even nuclear subs over in Newport News. But when I built a 75hp outboard, I thought, "dang this is like a Swiss watch!" Then I saw the inside of this 750.

Good thing is, you have Roach's videos already.

Will keep an eye out for any parts.

I've been keeping an eye on Craigslist and eBay, and so far not much has turned up even when I look within a few hours driving distance. There's this listing:
1989 kawasaki vulcan for parts

I tried communicating with him and he realized it was an '86, then said it was a 1000cc engine rather than a 750. When I asked him if the motor ran, his response was 'Yea put it will need work to put into it for it to go'. I'm not quite sure what he meant by that, but clearly he's not on top of his game.

My engine experience is pretty limited. My grandfather led me through rebuilding a lawnmower engine when I was a teenager, and maybe 15 years ago I rebuilt a 2.8 in my old Bronco II with somebody else leading the way. Both of those had nothing on this. Like you said, though, the videos Roach put together are excellent. The shop manual is also pretty clear. My only frustration with it ties to the grainy pictures and the way it sometimes jumps around. Occasionally I'd pull a part off and later realize I needed it in place to lock things together to loosen another bolt. In one case, I somehow missed a step of removing the transmission cover. Easy enough to remedy, but I have no idea when that step was intended to take place and how I missed it. Still, all in all it's been pretty straight forward. Now I have a giant Rubbermaid tote full of carefully labelled bags of parts. Hopefully the reassembly process won't be too terrible.

It's about 3 hours. Looked at that listing, but it's a bit of an unkown with the 'locked up' description. Could have spun a bearing just like mine and ultimately locked - no way to be sure without driving out and back, then tearing it apart.

Yeah, farther than I thought, You're almost closer to me.. I figured since hurricane Sandy was the cause, water damage. But yeah, it's a stretch. William may come through.
