I run my D404's stock size at 34 front and 41 rear, the Dunlop recommended loaded pressure, cause I'm 260. I've noticed that my front tire is ready to be replaced with 8200 miles on it. My rear only has about 4000 on it and it looks just as worn in the center and needs replacing already. Sides still look new on both tires really. I ride every day barring rainy weather and mostly rural mainly straight-slight curvy roads, not much twistie riding. Does this sound normal? On a car or truck, this wear pattern would suggest overinflating, but the rounded motorcycle tires seems like would normally wear mostly in the middle. You think I'm putting too much emphasis on my weight and maybe should be running slightly lower pressures? Seems like short tire life to me! Any thoughts?

I would say you could come down a little. Tire pressures, not your weight! ;) I run around 34-36 rear on my wife's Vulcan. No weight comparo however. She's pretty light.
But factoring the (I'm guessing here) Texas heat of the summer and highway speeds..... :confused: That might reduce your wear a bit.

Check your suspension settings as well. Maybe a click or two soft or hard will help your ride after the pressure adjustment.

It IS amazing how much a difference a few pounds of pressure will do! And it varies from bike to bike. (even Vulcan to Vulcan because of different riders weights plus riding style and suspension settings) I'm guilty of the flip side. I don't check them often enough and they tend to run low! :BLAM:

At the end of the day however, it is normal to wear out the rear first on most bikes. 4000 seems a little early though.

I ride mine at the same pressures and haven't noticed any excessive wear. The front has about 6800 on it and the rear is new and the only reason I replaced the old tire was due to a very large nail. I had around 5000 on the old one. I weigh in at 200 so I really can't comment on the weight issue. Every road here in S. Fla is straight so they do wear more in the center. Car tires are a whole different animal.......not as round on the bottom. That's my 2 cents worth.

I just sent a message to Dunlop to see what their suggestions are. Their recommendations for that tire is 34 front and 41 rear (loaded). I don't know what they mean by loaded, but if it means with the bike at maximum carrying capacity, then maybe we should be running a little lower according to our weight including gear. I'm not sure what the carrying capacity of our bike is, but in a vehicle, that makes a big difference on tire wear, using the math to calculate the tire pressure according to vehicle weight and tire load rating/psi.

I weigh 230 and have my 404's at 28/32. I go by the service manual's ratings.
I only have 2k miles on mine and they still look new. It's usually just me and some light weight stuff. Never two up or any luggage.

Hot here too in Florida. I'll watch them this summer as since all the work is behind me, should yield more riding time.

Jon, your numbers are closer to what I would feel is best for wear. Knifemaker states in the Verses that he doesn't recommend going higher than 34 on the rear, although he's talking about the OEM tires.

I'm with Jon - I go by the service manual recs, 'cause the manufacturers seem to be a tad ambitious. I run the front at 30, rear at 32.

From the wear pattern, it does sound like the pressure's affecting 'em. I'd think you'd see a more even, "flatter" wear pattern at correct psi, but a "high" worn spot sounds suspiciously like overinflated. Bummer, though, 'cause tires don't come cheap!

I found it a bit more bouncy too with higher inflation. I like the ride much better at the factory specs.

Since we're on the subject of tire brands and pressures....my bike came stock with Bridgestone "Exedra" model tires.

Anyone have any idea how many miles I should reasonably get with these on the front/rear tire--assuming I run them at Kaw factory suggested pressures?.....:confused:

I got just about 10k on mine when I switched to Metzlers.
I had a little bit left on them but why take a chance.

Me, too. 28/30 felt a little "flat" to me, so I went up a tad 'cause I like the responsiveness at the slightly higher pressure. But much higher and it's definitely a sharper (bad way) ride. When I was bicycle racing, I used to take my tires up to 120 psi - less tire on the road, very snappy feel, etc. But god forbid that it rained in the middle of the race running at those pressures!

i would come back to factory specs, or just a tad more... keep in mind 404 are designed for heavier bikes, so more pressure would be needed under load for lets say a 1600 classic, as are a lot of aftermarket tires.

Also no doubt, texas heat will make a difference, but i havent seen any heat ratings on motorcycle tires... its prolly pretty low like a b/c because i dont see very much of the channels and stuff that the air would flow through. This is in part why innertubed tires burn off quicker cause of the added heat of the tube...

I like the quick response I get at the high pressures, however I think I'll try it a little lower and see what the difference is. I used to ride two up alot but since I got the g/f an EN 500 I really don't need that high air pressure. Sure do miss the backrest though !!

Oh ! I forgot to say that my rear tire is 170/80/15 so perhaps that makes a difference.
It's a Dunlop K 555 for a Honda application.

Man, you've got me pegged! Ha! I can say for sure it's not wearing like that because of spinouts! I ride like the old man that I am.;)

Knifemaker mentions in his shocks writeup in the Verses that you should have 10% of your weight including baggage pumped into the rear shocks. I've got mine at 41psi and it looks like it should be more like 30. Once I get this all figured out my bike might ride like a different bike.

About the metzlers, I've heard nothing but great things about them and how they wear much longer than the 404's. Can anybody verify this from personal experience? The longer wear would offset the higher cost I would think...

Don't know how much air I lost over the cold Winter yet, but I have had
good results with Owner's Manual recommendation of 28/32 pounds per square inch with the stock Bridgestones.
