I've ran my bike before with out the chrome ear covers (with stock filters) and anytime I got above 4000rpms, the bike would start missing and didn't have any of that familiar Vulcan get-up-n-go.
Replaced the covers and all was fine.
So, IMO, I'd think ya would need to rejet.
If you are just replacing the type of filters in the ears, you will not have to rejet, but you might want to adjust the air mix screws a bit.
If you are removing the ears and going with the pods at the carbs, you will.
An "ear shave" involves also removing the air surge tank located underneath the gas tank and adding the coasters
I stand correct. Thanks Dianna. After I posted that post I was sitting in the place I do most of my thinking (the little room in the house with a sink toilet) and came to the same conclusion. I did a shave and removed the air box. I put everything back together and tried Roxie out. I kept increasing main and pilot jet sizes until I found a combo that worked. Not much fun and got kinda pricey, but, she runs excellent now (apart from the fact that she is in a million pieces due to a stator change and repaint.
Not wanting to cause too much confusion.... I it took it as you wanted to remove the air filter housings (ears), leaving the air surge tank and have K&N type filters mounted where the air filter housings were.
Is this what you had in mind? Kind of a 'partial' ear shave?
I believe what you will find is that the ears, or chromed covers that we call ears, restrict the airflow enough to match the jets we have in the carbs, stock. If you remove the covers and only have the K&N filters, or any other filters for that matter, I believe the uncovered filters will increase the airflow, causing what Hyper mentioned above, a lean condition. It wouldn't take much to throw things off. Seems like that is exactly what he did and found that it ran like crap over a certain rpm range.
Yep, and like I said, once I put the covers back on, it ran perfect.
Now, if you're wanting to get out of doing the re-jet, ya probably could make the air inlet (behind the filters) smaller. But it would probably take a few tries with different restriction sizes to get it just right.

Just wanted to add that with the position the ears are in - something uncovered like the K&N pods would be way more exposed (in the earshave location they are semi protected) - so you'd have to be paranoid about riding in the rain, etc.

You can however get the stock replacement K&N and not rejet... but I think that's allready been mentioned.
