Last week I posted with some questions about a bike I was considering. Well, I am now a fellow vn750 owner. Bought the bike last Thursday. Thanks to your input:smiley_th I was able to point out that it would need tires and got another $200 off of the price, plus the owner installed a new battery(not sealed though). Very clean nice looking bike stock except for windshield and aftermarket mirrors. Tires are ordered(110/90/19 front 170/80/15 rear) so I'm not riding it much yet. Looking to get a fluid change done and lube the splines while changing tires. Already moved the r/r.
I read here a reference to fusing the stator, is this important and how is it done?
What else might need urgent attention?
I'm also wanting to add saddlebags which means T/S relocation any suggestions on either?
Can additional lighting be added, I want to be seen by cagers, how much will the charging system support?

There is some debate over fusing the stator. I wouldn't do it. Unless you had some way to break all three lines at the same time. But why bother.... I cut the bullet connectors off and soldered the wires... the less wire/connections between the stator and R/R the better. I believe the max power is somewhere around 300 watts? If you want to be seen, I would suggest the HID conversion and driving lights. I put 35watt lights low on the forks near the axle. It's hard for people to judge your speed/distance from just your headlight. The driving lights create a triangle of lights and are easier to judge. Add a brake light to the rear. I replaced my brake light with an LED cluster, added a dedicated brake light where the reflector is on the trunk, and converted my turns to dynamic clusters from custom dynamics.

I don't recommend having the shop that's replacing your tires do the spline lube too. Do it yourself. The main reason is that they aren't likely to use the best grease, which is Honda Moly-60. (I got mine at a Honda bike dealer for about $10) It's not that hard to do, directions are available on this site, and you can get familiar with your new bike!

plus taking the tire off yourself is easy and will save you a chunk of change, also cheap and easy and doesnt take long is clean all your electrical contacts and coat with dielectric grease. (battery, ground to frame etc.)
if air filters are in good shape you can get a k&n recharge kit at autozone for about 20 bucks. containers cleaner and filter oil!

I agree ... Do not fuse the stator wires....solder them instead.

The bike has about 70 watts of "extra" juice available... I put in a set of driving lights...replacing the 55w bulbs for 20w ones...a total of 40w for the pair. Would not got much higher here....install a voltmeter to monitor the system.

They did make a difference at night....

Pay particular attention to lance328`s posts. You want an HID conversion kit with dual bulbs, an HID for the LO beam and Halogen for the HI beam.

The current posts from 2011 have links to ebay for the HID kits that lance reccomends (6000K temperature color, second generation = 4200 lumens).

X2 to dariv`s driving lights mounted low on the forks to create a triangle of light. This gives other drivers depth perception and something to gauge distance from your bike. (That`s one reason why a train locomotive`s headlights are arranged in a big triangle.)

I have the hid conversion and it was the best 40 bucks I spent. still thinking of adding driving lights cause where I live at night you cannot have to much light. friggin deer! I'm so far out in the sticks the boys around here deer hunt with knives! LOL
