I am somewhat new to a Vulcan. I am helping my friend who bought a 92 Vulcan 750 a couple of years ago and was always having problems with it until it simply would not start any more. We researched the problem and found it was not getting enough juice to keep running and determined the Stator and Rectifier were shot. During the teardown to fix it we found antifreeze in the oil and realized the Mechanical seal was shot. We fixed all that and put it back together. I would not start. I checked float levels and found them very high. We pulled the carbs and rebuilt them. I also found debris in the petcock so we rebuilt it. Should be good to go. We get spark and we seem to get fuel into the cylinders. It just will not even sputter. Is there anything special about the Vulcan to consider?

Have you tried spraying QuickStart in the intake to eliminate the possibility of it being a fuel issue? You may also try cranking with the fuel valve off to ensure its not a flooding issue. Of course spark the plug on the side of the cylinder to check spark. Check compression (which I think you said you did). Resistance test on coils?

If you got all 3 without excess fuel...it should run.

Check your air filters and make sure the plugs are not fouled or flooded.
If you have good battery voltage at the coil primary, and you get a spark on all 4 plugs, it should at least fire.

Are you using the choke at all?
adding choke is actually the opposite of most...it is a fuel enrichener system...so it may be flooding it if the choke is causing the plugs to get too wet.

Also check the boots on the carbs to ensure there are no craks or leaks just in case.

Start with the basics. Are your spark plugs good? Is your battery showing at least 12.5 volts? You could run jumpers from a car battery to your battery and see if it fires. DO NOT have the car running. Yours sounds like an ignition problem rather than fuel or air.

how far into the engine did you go? are you sure the cam chains didn't jump a tooth? did you put the pickup (pulsator) coils back in the correct spots?

Hey, i have a 1992 vn750 A8 so i suppose is the same has your friend's, and i had the same problem...

I took some steps and it solved it

1- my stator was dead i had to replace it
2- Rectifier was dead also, and i replace it
3- I set a new battery
4- Carbs, i found out that 1 of the 2 diaphragms had a small hole, so i replaced it, reajusted the carbs fuel and air flow
5- Repared a hole in the rubber tube connecting the air filter to the carb
6 - New spark plugs

Then started the bike took a bit but never did the same again, and i used a jump cable to a car battery for a stronger start, so it can be a good advice also
