I am looking at buying a 2003 Vulcan 750 with 1900 miles. After reading the stories here about the drive shaft issues I am concerned about the possibility of finding this after the purchase.
I'd hate to not consider the bike as it is in great condition with low miles and a good price also BUT,

Would 1900 miles be enough to wear the shaft or splines if there was not enough lubrication?
Should it be ok but just pull the wheel and check it out after getting it home?

great site btw.

Actually the 2003s were the ones that seemed to have more of the dry spline syndrome. I doubt that 1900 miles would be enough to have worn them though. Fortunately it is not that hard to check and a good lube with moly will make sure they stay intact. The front spline does not have to be lubed as much. A good spray of white lithium will do them just fine.
I believe you should go over all of this with a new bike anyway. If nothing else it gives you a good starting point with your regular maintenance.
