Strange indicator fault with the VN I have recently bought. When it is sitting idling the indicators work just fine or when I am just sitting on the bike and I try them, they work fine too. However, at speed when I flick the indicator switch the indicators do not come on. I find that the will only come on when I have pretty much taken all the speed off and down to either 2nd or 1st gear.

Anyone have any suggestions or fixes for this. Thank you.

try changing ur battery and see if that helps sounds like a charging problem it might need a new stator does this happen with the bike out of gear and motor reved ?

Odd problem, and charging is the only thing I can think of. Somehow charging at lower rpm, but not when revved up?

Seems like a loose wire would be less predictable.

Thinking about it... I have seen charging systems that had output at low rpm, then started losing as the rpm went up. Seems like the bulbs should at least light up though.

Time to get your volt meter out.

Quick update. Indicators work up to 1500rpm then drop out. Assuming then it is the stator, is this a big job to sort. Sorry new to this bike so lots of stupid questions.

Engine has to be at least tilted or removed to replace the stator. I tilted. Most of us prefer getting the stator rewound by TPE, versus a Chinese replacement.

Look around this site, there are test procedures for the stator and the voltage regulator, and there's a download for the repair manual, as well as tips on all repairs.

Sometimes it can be as simple as dirty or burned bullet connectors on the three yellow stator wires.

Bike is a 1992. Got a bike wrench who is gonna do a few tests on it later on in week to check stator. Fingers crossed that its not the stator as the bill i would imagine is gonna be big.

All tests have been carried out with no issues as per the instructions i followed on here. Problem still there. when revved the indicators still cut out past 1500rpm. Happens as well when hazard lights are put on. Headlight, brake light, license plate light etc still stay on and dont drop out. Has anyone any advice or ideas as to other possible causes as i am totally baffled by this. Thank you.
