Idle screw not working

Hey everyone, first time motorcycle owner so bear with me. My 93 750 idles low, around 850 rpms so when I crank it I have to hold the throttle open for a couple seconds or it’ll die. Sometimes it also happens when I stop. I tried turning the adjustment screw( the little black knob) and nothing happens. I read something about a pilot jet being too big or something but like I said I’m a newbie to this so if anybody has been through this and could explain what’s going on newbie terms I’d appreciate it. The idle speed screw is attached to a spring coils. That one turned. It turns a screw on a bracket. If you can reach behind the knob, you may be able to turn the coil springs by hand, or with the pliers. Take a look and see if you see any movement of the spring when you turn the knob clockwise should increase the speed I believe it could also be out of adjustment and may require a number of turns to take up any slack study it closely. It’s really a simple device and they are simple cures for it.

So I took a good look and I had to turn the knob a good six times for it to finally work. I was afraid to do that before posting here because I saw people saying that it needed at most two turns. Only thing now is that it’s popping a lot at idle

Agree. Take a look and see if the adjustment knob has come detached from the spring coil. Looks like an actuating cable. Could be that it's detached inside somewhere too. You can follow the cable to it's other end at the carb/throttle, and see if there's any movement of the adjustment screw when you turn the knob.

That’s quite possible it’s your idle circuit. Have you driven the bike it might need to put some seafoam in there and get it up to temperature get the juices going. Have you change the oil and filter? What about antifreeze? Also clean the air filters. I don’t know how much you’ve done to the bike, but these are maintenance things that should be taken care of if you don’t know if and when it was previously done, tell her to start fresh then you know what you got also change your brake fluid throw simple tasks. I changed the oil, oil filter and spark plugs. I topped off the antifreeze, a flush is next on the list and I’ve also got to check the air filters. I’ve only driven it back and forth to work so at most about 100 miles and other than the popping and the low idle it’s worked perfectly.

You fixed the low idle right . The popping is typical on deceleration if you marble the reed valves you can improve on it search for marble in data base
Popping can also be stuck coast enrichers on the carbs, Seafoam can loosen them up sometimes, but they have a rubber diaphragm that can rot out, or the plunger can stick.

I noticed in your other thread that your bike is earshaved, the popping could be because your A/F mix is too rich possibly. Besides the idle adjustment knob, there’s two screws, one on each carb. They’re covered by a plug from the factory but if yours are exposed then they may have been adjusted at some point. Factory setting is 1-3/4 turns out but many bump them out to 2-1/2 because the factory sets them lean.

I did not know the factory setting was that low
