I'm forwarding this question from my son (who rides a Suzuki Gladius) - what is the impact (if any) on a bike that is left out in the sun for long periods of time?

I'm able to keep my Vulcan in a garage at home, and under cover when at work. But I know that some of you ~ like my son ~ leave your bikes out in the open all the time because you don't have other options. I'm guessing that he doesn't want to deal with the hassle of using a cover.

Other than dust/dirt, you have the usual....paint fade, seats "age" faster, fuel evaporates, and yeah, the can get hot to sit on.

Most makers keep this in mind when building a bike... Using fade resistant paints.

The effects of course are very slow, but after many years you can tell a difference between a bike kept covered and one exposed to sunlight constantly.

Those that can ride year round do to warm locations might want to invest in a cover for everyday use. The do make "half covers" that pack small.

Never left a bike out, always had a shed, but I know it will raise cane with a boat, besides paint fadin pretty quick, seats look like they have been burned, and metal flake even pops through the gel coat, most exposed plastics will curl and crack, its just not good... I mean, now and again won't kill it, but extended periods are another story... IMHO...
Surely he can find some sorta cover like KM suggested to protect it from the UV rays and maybe the rain... Even parkin it in the shade with something to keep the bird poop off would be helpful...
Have a good one...Old Dog...

I should also mention that full a cover not only protects the bike from the enviroment, but from man. Most bike thieves pass by covered bikes, simply because they do not know what is under the cover. So covered bikes get stolen less.

See the good looking guy below? Man that yellow R6 is sharp...lets steal it!
(and they did not even notice the FJR under the cover behind it)

(Perhaps they were looking at the Smokey Mountains in the back.....)

Covers make good theft deterents.
