Help, oils drain plug broke off

123 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Spockster
Went to change oil today and the head on the plug was already completely rounded off. I couldn’t find an extraction socket at the store so I used a rotary tool to make a slot the. Used a flathead impact screwdriver to try and bust it loose only I ended up breaking half the head off. Any tips on getting this out? 1986 Vulcan 750

You could slot the plate on both sides of the missing nut, then use a chisel and go in it at a 45° angle and start walking it around. Once it starts to move you should be OK you’ll need to buy a new piece because that bolt head is part of the whole plate, apparently it was tighten down too much. There’s an O-ring underneath a jthat plate. It just needs to be snug you don’t need the bull it

I'd just use the chisel and bump the cap counterclockwise.

eBay should have the cap.

When you put the new plug on, I believe it has a rubber seal on one side. Some folks will rub a little oil on on drain caps to prevent it from sticking in the future. I've always done this with cars. Should be okay to do on a bike as well.

Just don't overtighten it, just snug is enough.
