On the way to work this morning I stopped at the local convience store for a couple items, when i went back out and tried to start the bike it cranked but would not fire...i checked the run/stop switch to make sure I had it on run (i have done that before) checked petcock to make sure it was on...cranked it again and after a few seconds got a loud backfire and started. This is the first time something like this has happened. Any ideas of what could have caused the problem?

Well, you might want to have the battery load tested. Could just be bad gas?

SeaFoam it, install some NGK Iridium plugs and see if that helps. Look up the post on "pick up coil gap"

If it just started doing this, it's likely a carb or battery issue. Are you giving it gas when you tried to start it?

Happened again on the way home yesterday when i stopped at the DMV to renew the tags on my wifes van. this time i did not give it any gas while cranking and did not get a backfire...I added seafoam and read the pickup coil mod and will probably be doing that in the next few days.

thanks for the help.

+1 on replacing the plugs. My bike was doing the same. Leaning the mixture and a fresh set of plugs solved the issue for me (for now).
