Wouldn't it be nice to have a gathering or group ride in PA.... Maybe all folks meet somewhere near I80 so that Vulcaneers from both Northern as well as Southern part of the state can come over for a quick meet. We have brunch and then go over for a ride .... followed by dinner and then we head back home

I know we have a bunch of folks from PA who participate actively on this forum.. so lets hear what you guys say!!! Can we make this happen!!!

Ya just missed one we had at the end of July, in Erie. But I'm guessing you're thinking more over your way, on the Eastern side of the state?

I'd be up for another. :smiley_th
But I'd probably stay the night so I could take a nice backroad ride home afterwards.

For some reason, the Erie trip fell of my radar.... and I have been kicking myself for that.... Anyway I was thinking some where central so no one has to drive more than 2-3 hrs to get to the meet and then we can spend more time riding together.. Anyone knowing the central PA area well enough should be able suggest a good meeting point and some nice routes for the ride.

My mom used to live over by E-town (Elizabethtown). I used to love riding through the countryside there. Well, except when they had just sprayed the fields with liquified chicken sh!t. Amazing how thick the juice on the visor gets - I mean they're just little tiny bugs...but a LOT of 'em... You know your in the country, not the city, the clue is in the smell...

Guys lets decide on where we are gonna meet and the route. So far I think there has been only 1 recommendation. If you want to recommend a place then please add it to the list. Once we have a venue/route I think we can pick any weekend (or 2) and roll !!!

1)Pocono international Raceway

ride

we could roll a route through a couple of the state parks, maybe rt 118 through ricketts glen s.p. then up 487 to 87 through worlds end s.p. 154 cuts right through there, from there we could head towards williamsport where there are several state forrests. just a suggestion, I could actually sit down and put a route together if anyone likes this idea.

Sounds like a good idea. Could you get a route done and then we can see if others want any changes or tweaks..

I did part of this route on my way to the Erie Gathering. I would recommend going from Worlds End SP to Wellsboro / PA Grand Canyon. I took the following route:
From Worlds End SP take Rt154 to Canton.
From Canton take Rt 414 to Morris
From Morris takd Rt287 to Wellsboro
From Wellsboro Rt660 to PA Grand Canyon

It took me about 2 1/2 hours at a relaxed pace (& a couple of stops)

Rt154 was especially exciting
At about 8:30 AM I was riding down an isolated, rather steep section of mountain road. The weather overcast and the road wet from overnight rain. I was doing about 30-35mph focusing on the road conditions when a doe jumped out of the woods into the oncoming lane about 20 yards in front of me. I gingerly hit the brakes and moved toward the right. The doe took two bounds in the other lane in the same direction I was travelling, then jumped back in the woods on the left. It seemed she was right next to me, probably about 10-15 feet away. I'm glad she used good judgement. My heart was pounding. I was very lucky.
From then on, I was careful to scan the sides of the road as well as road surface conditions - and slow down more.

So my advice - Be alert for deer on your ride. Its tough to stay focused the whole time. Go slow and enjoy the ride.

By the way, my campsite at Worlds End was great. They put a thick layer of mulch down for tent pads - nice and soft and well drained.

One more tip: Its football season. If you are going through central PA, check if there is a Penn State home game. The roadways really get clogged.

if we have a definite route picked out, then we can look at timeframe, I'm pretty flexible with destination. would like to stay within 3 to 4 hours of Harrisburg.
