I keep blowing the fuse for the instrument bezel and the tail light... It lasts abot 2 miles then it blows... is it a short?

I don't know for sure, but you might want to check the voltage coming from your battery or rectifier regulator... I'm no electrical whiz.

It is not a short in the system. You are obviously getting more amps than what the fuse can tolerate. First make sure you are using the correct amperage fuse. That seems like a no brainer but you would be surprised at the number of people accidentally using the wrong fuse. After that check the stator. That is where your power comes from and if you are blowing your fuses after 2 miles of riding then it seems to me that that is the correct place to start. If you have the service manual and a multi-meter you can do a check on the stator to see if it is within values. If that checks out I would then check the R/R. It is possible this could cause you problems as well. Again you will need to service manual and a multi-meter to check the values. Good luck.

Do not disscount what has already been said, but I think you have a short.
Put new fuse in and move the wires that move around when riding. Turn the handles back and forth and maybe sit on the bike and bounce it around a bit.

Agree with niterider. Most likely a bare wire or a connector pulling out and shorting to ground.

I have to agree with niterider, fuses blow whith shorts. A sudden increase of draw is what blows them. If I had to guess, you will probably find a wire or two rubbed through around the trees, that's where I found mine, Check the lighting wires and the ones coming from the keyswitch. Move the bars from stop to stop a few times with the power on, should narrow the search down. Oh yeah, Start with a full box of fuses and some extras, or get a circuit breaker that you can insert temporarily, you'll need them.

hmm. could this be connected to the occasional engine shut down when I am at an idle and turn the handlebars right without moving the bike?

Could be, rabbit. I would have to point you to the keyswitch wires, there's a little tab under it to keep the keyswitch from being dropped out (theft deterent) that the wires rub on and eventually through the insulation. Mine was shorting out on that tab when I turned hard right and knocked out all the lights. Start by pulling the headlight bucket and look over every inch of wire before calling it ok.

I had a neww switch put in under warrenty for the exact same problem. Seems the hard turn pulls the contact opn and you end up dead. Wiggleing the handlebars hard in each direction will kill the bike.

wires going to the ignition had shorted out.. just before a ride last night I blew the 30 amp fuse. the yellow and the blue wires had rubbed through and were rubbing on the frame. I patched it with tape, then wrapped all the wires with tape and then cable tired them out of the way...
