Just a quick qestion for anyone. I've been reading in this website the recommendation for buying a new maint free battery. Sounds like the benefits FAR outweight the expence. So, I've been looking into ordering one online. ( never really felt comforable doing this, always liked seeing the product in person) The ones I have found through here are the Westco YTX14AHL-BS and the YUASA YTX14AHL. One - are these the correct batteries? and two do they have the proper terminal mount (top versus side)? I have have seen motorcycle batteries in AutoZone and Pepboys etc with different terminal mounts and want to make sure these have the right ones. (top) Thanks for your help.

That is indeed the correct models, Jeff. The terminal mounts are on the top and they slide right into place. I got 3 1/2 years out of my last Westco and the only reason I replaced it was due to a long trip I was taking last Summer, I am sure I could have got more use out of it.......

Go with the Yuasa model.

The Yuasa is the more reliable brand of the two.

Personally, I've been running the Yuasa since last summer. No problems.

Sorry, have to take issue with that. My own semi scienticifc study shows that both the Yussa and the Westco have almost the same failure rate.
A discussion with a well known battery vendor indicates that this seems true accross the board for all battery makers, they all put out a "bad one" now and then.
Someone mentioned that the Yussa had more cold cranking amps..but no one I know has tested them independently, an I am always hesitant to accept figures offered by the maker, as they often times figure these specs on paper, and do not actualy test the battery itself.
I know many folks that have Westco batteries that have out preformed Yussa's, and I guess if one looks hard enough, you will find those that have found it going the other way.

Do a little on line research for price. I got my Yuasa for $31. including shipping. The web pade had the wrong price posted and when I called customer service they honored the price. I have definately noticed easier starting and my voltmeter stays in the green even when idleing @ a stoplight. Earlier posts advised to check Sears as the MF they sell is actually made by Westco and carries the Sears warrenty. If you are planning on long rides that can be an advantage as most med to large towns have a sears store.

The Westco vs Yuasa debate could be that at some point, more people were getting the Westco, so of course it would seem that it was more of a problematic battery.

If the two of them were side by side, and one was a couple dollars cheaper, I'd most likely go with the cheaper one, and pay little attention to the name on it.

Look carefully at that 29.00 battery, its not a MF. I just ordered the AGM Yeausa YTX14AHL-BS for 48.58. Almost 30.00 cheaper than the next lowest price. Motorcyclehelmets.com
