I'm about to put the side cover back on after a stator replacement, and I have some gasket material stuck on the block side real good. I was wondering if there's some sort of solvent or some other way to get it off. I don't want damage the block by trying to scrape the material off. It's on there good around some of the holes for the bolts for the side cover.....

I soak mine with Laquer Thinner...about 4 bucks a can at any home store, then take an inspection sticker scraper and it comes right off.

I usually mount a cup wire brush in my die grinder. Takes the gasket off in about 50 seconds and leaves the metal clean. Pretreat with laquer thinner or gasket remover first to ease the job if you like.
