Hi everyone! I've been 'lurking' these forums for several months since getting a used '95. RR relocated and reworked the front brakes thanks to the great posts on this forum :)
Anyway... I noticed on the way home yesterday that I could smell raw gas when sitting at the lights. Upon inspection, there was gas dribbling (at a rate of about 2-3 drops a second) from the petcock body; it stops when the engine isn't running. I took the tank off and made sure the 4 screws on the back of the petcock were not loose, but that didn't cure the leak. I can't honestly tell exactly where it is coming from... has to be at either of the two elbow connections that go to the carb hoses or is from that little 'vent' hole on the back of the petcock body. The hoses aren't cracked/damaged either.
Just wondering what all could go wrong ... a bad seal in the petcock valve maybe? The front elbow seems to turn easier than expected (which I noticed when taking the tank off); the back one seems quite rigidly attached. Any ideas? And what is that vent-looking hole in the back of the valve body for?

I recently rebuilt my petcock because I suspected a diaphragm leak causing my sputtering (fuel starvation).
With it only happening while the engine runs, I suspect the seal at the diaphragm. You might only need to replace it and nothing else. However, while you're in there, might as well change out a few o-rings too. There's a chance one of them is to blame.

Here are the P/Ns you'll most likely need (thanks to Ron Ayers's fiche). I can't remember if the diaphragm comes with the new o-ring or not.

Crap - I didn't read your post thoroughly enough!
I don't believe the elbows should move. If that's the case you may need a new petcock. Sometimes you can scoop one up on Ebay but here's Ron Ayers's price:

The vent-looking hole: I was curious about that too - my guess is an actual vent to allow the diaphragm to move.

Just an update... I hadn't noticed the vent hole in the plastic plate of the diaphram that will drain if the front of the diaphram leaks. On the bright side, the local dealer did have them in stock for $17.
Believe it or not, the elbows on mine will turn and can be removed/reinstalled without leaking. There is a small circular indent in both the elbow and the petcock for where a very thin O-ring could (should?) be installed... there was no O-ring on either one so apparently friction works to seal it just fine.
