Lately I have been noticing a squeeking when I apply my front brakes. It seems to have been getting worse. I think they are the original pads (copper sintered?) with 12,800miles on them. My rotors dont show any signs of scoreing, or grooves. Im thinking about pulling my front wheel, giving the pads a good sanding (they still have about 40% left) and sanding the rotors also. What causes the squeek? I might just replace the pads. I think I want the EBC Organic pads because they are soft, and wont wear my rotors. Does anyone else use those pads, if so how are they? thanks.

Disc brakes have always had a problem with squealing. It is caused by a harmonic vibration between the pad and the rotor. It is good that your rotors are good, they are NOT cheap. If you are unsure what the pads are, I'd probably replace them with EBC ORGANIC pads. "Sintered" or metallic pads are a lot more likely to make noise, and will definitely wear the rotors down a lot faster. Two other possibilities are contaminated pads, or glazed pads. Use spray brake parts cleaner to clean them, and sandpaper to remove glazing.

I know these brakes will make a noise simply because they are drilled, but it is a high pitched squeek that is annoying. My dad's 86 has the EBC organics, and his are almost silent and his rotors polished like mirrors!

Yeah, when I get around to taking the wheel off I will put it back on with grease on the backs.

Holes don't make any noise, unless you have superhuman hearing. Brakes are drlilled to let the rotor cool faster and heat evenly. Your actually more likely to get a squeaky brake with an undrilled disc over a drilled one.

(and I'll add before someone else does that the holes also dispel water faster and save some weight. Older pads used to actually "smoke" under hard braking and those fumes , a gas, would get trapped between the pad and rotor hampering braking. The holes helped vent this. Newer pads don't have this issue any more)

Yes drilled rotors cool faster, but it is proven that drilled/slotted rotors make noise under braking. My Camaro used to have drilled and slotted rotors all around, and it made the same noise this bike does, not a squeek, but like a vibration.

Well, I'll believe you if you can provide a link to some test, some expert, or some brake company that says this.

I had a RD 400 that came with un drilled discs. I paid to have them drilled at a machine shop. I never heard any difference.

Ive had a bike with a solid rotor, and this one and i can hear a huge difference. When my car was switched back to standard rotors it was much smoother/quieter. It really doesnt matter haha, I just need to get my squeek fixed

Sorry KM, drilled/slotted rotors do make a noise, usually a clicking sound which does fade after rotor is worn in. If you google " drilled rotor noise " you will find many concerns about the noise. The reason your rotors that you had drilled didn't make noise is because they do not have dimples. Manufactured slotted or drilled rotors have dimples which create the noise.

Not sure what you mean by "dimples" .... But I guess I never really paid much attention to noise coming from the brakes unless it was loud and annoying (like squealing)

Would guess that as pretty much every bike I have owned had drilled rotors so not really atuned to what you guys are talking about. ( like white noise it just fades in the background to me?)

I can see slotted rotors "vibrating" however. Just never noticed anything I'd call "noise" from the front brakes.

I have a Yam 1000 and it has drilled factory rotors and makes no noise at all :smiley_th

I agree with you there KM although I have had a number of bikes with drilled rotors but never noticed any noise from any of them though

Well that was my point. None of the bikes I've owned made noise either. My FJR has duel drilled rotors and I have been able to cut the motor, pull up onthe sidewalk and stop right behind some kids playing on the sidewalk. I honk my horn and scare the crap out of them. (yes I am evil)

You would think that if my brakes made ANY noise they'd turn around when I stop a foot behind them because they heard something. But have snuck up on them several times succsesfully....;)

I have never been able to tell the difference between drilled discs and non drilled discs. I have never had a car with drilled discs. Many of my older bikes had solid discs, all of my current bikes have drilled discs. Some discs squeal, some don't. But I have never noticed any difference between drilled discs and non drilled discs. The holes have nothing to do with the "disc brake squeal". That is a vibration set up between the pad and the caliper. It has nothing to do with the discs. You can get some stuff at the auto parts store to put on the back of the pads that is supposed to dampen the squeal. I have no idea whether it works or not. I'm thinking if it did, pad manufacturers would put it on their new pads, and sell them as "anti squeal" pads. Don't use anything on the back of the pads which might get on the front of the pads. You just might find yourself with NO brakes.
