Is there a difference between the front and rear coils? I noticed that they have different part numbers and the front is discontinued now. Are they interchangeable?

As long as you observe the polarity of the connections and can mount it, it will work.

Even some aftermarket coils should work. As long as you can mount them. Accel used to make the big yellow coils for the vn, I saw one set on eBay years ago.
