I've managed to screw myself up replacing the clutch friction plates. I didn't pay attention to which way they came off because I put too much faith on the youtube videos rebuilding the engine.

In the service manual that I downloaded on page 5.2 it shows the pads (hope that's a good description) on the friction rings facing the engine (back of basket). On the pt 25 video on youtube Andrew Roth puts the friction plates on with the pads facing "away" from the engine towards the front of the basket.

I inherited a bike that no doubt was used and abused. I should have scraped it but it was a kick in the pants to ride (for a block or two). I rebuilt the engine but when I rode it the trans was slipping. The rings seemed to be within tolerance but I didn't replace the springs and I put the rings in the way the youtube video showed.

I've bought new friction rings and springs and want to do this right.

Does it matter which direction the ring pads go in? Am I reading the manual right that the pads face the engine? Does it matter?:confused:

I havnt had my clutch apart yet, but the pics of the friction disks I have seen show material on BOTH sides of them.

some early year VN's had a different groove pattern on the frictions that meant they had to go a certain way, but latter years used a pattern that didnt matter. I think they are interchangable between them as well.

Yaa...the plates have friction pads on both sides, so dont matter....its only the very last plate that goes back "different", and its one notch off....make sure ya soak the new plates in oil overnight too....

Note too, and I dunno if ya bought the steel plates in between also, but if ya didnt, give them old steel plates a scrub with some steel wool before reinstalling to take the glaze off....

Well I feel stupid. Gotta get off these meds. :) Hobbled out to the garage and looked at the new rings. Sure enough pads on both sides. Sometimes the real thing is better that the pictures. Thanks for having mercy on me and thanks for the tip on the steel rings. Will definitely work them over.
