i just bought this bike and fixed the stator and r/r. when it is in neutral i cant get it to go down into first but if i push the bike forward i can get it to go into 2nd then sometimes wen im in second and moving i can get it to go down into first but not very often. the guy i bought it from said it just startd doing that right before he sold it to me. i have tried adjusting the cable and lever at the bottom and it is no help.
any advice?

It sounds like the shift barrel is messed up. Mine would not go into any gear at all but it was a cheap fix. The repair guy said that the spring or something in there got bent and out of place. he replaced it and all is fine and it actually shifts smoother now.

do you know where this shift barrel is and how hard it would be to do myself. any info would be helpfull. i dont want to pull the engine again so i hope that is not involved.

That's a tough one where I wasn't there when it was repaired but the engine didn't have to be removed. It is on the right side amongst the clutch mechanisms. Someone on here may know or if you can get a blown up view of the shifter linkage.

I`m not sure what the shift barrel is.

Go to this link, click on TRANSMISSION, then the GEAR CHANGE SCHEMATIC.
Take a look at the lower part of this diagram and identify P/N 13165 called a PAWL, and P/N 13236 called the POSITION CHANGE LEVER.

They are on the left side of the engine, under the cover with the oil level sight glass in it. The tips of the pawl can become worn off to where they won`t engage the gear change mechanism. The parts under that cover are the only tranny mechanisms that are accessible without pulling the engine, IIRC.

I believe someone also had the position lever misaligned in some way.

Drop the oil, and pull the cover off to see if you can see anything amiss inside there.
I remember someone building the pawl tips up with a MIG welder and reshaping/restoring them. Not sure if the pawl can be removed by only removing retaining clip or not.

Ive been trying to find an exploded view of it and I saw one the other day on ebay with all the parts but basically it is what the shift forks go onto. Mine got stuck in neutral and would not go into any gear. It was a spring or wire that came off and it shifted badly til it stopped shifting completely.

i was looking at this break down today with one of my budy that has worked on bike trannys before and we were looking at that parts breakdown listed above. his guess was the same part 13165 i could not find the other part you were talking about. but i was just going to ask where they were located. but you answered my question. i hope that is it. i really dont want to pull the engine again

i also just found out my ticking poblem is a broken spring in the acct. i just made me a mcct so ill see if it works.

well i got that cover off this morning and v=everything looks ok in there, but it looks like that shifting pawl (13165 in link above) is not moving far enough to put it into first. and it does not look worn out either. is there any type of adjustment in there? it looks like the rod (39110) can be adjusted but do i have to pull that left cover to get to it (which requires pulling the engine almost) thanks for any help

well i just found my answer searching other threads. i dont want to pull the engine and especially split it. as stated above about welding on the pawl do you think i could put a little extra weld so it will push that star wheel a little farther or am i just wasting my time? i almost wonder if that rod is bent because i can shift just fine in all the gears but not into first (exept on some ocasions)
anybody want to buy a bike? haha
