OK OK OK!! I know my bike is dirty but for give me, PLEASE.
Alright people. I went out on the limb. We'll see if it can fly. I'm set on engine oil cools all internal parts but our bike engine was not given a way to cool the oil other than the bottom of the case having air blow over it. To try to help cool the oil I ordered an external oil cooler and an oil filter/cooler adapter from Ebay dealers. Bought another cool but was way to big for the area available for use without loading the coolant radiator with extra heat. Here is a small write up for your entertainment.


Part to be used is the oil cooler that is made of aluminum with 6 inches of 1/4 deep fins per side for cooling. Total of finned area is 12 inches but there is 20 inches of tubing altogether to remove heat. Has one mount tab at the top. Hoses connect at the bottom. The oil filter adapter mounts in place of the filter with the filter remounting on it.


First thing is to remove the filter for the adapter to be mounted.


This is a pain to do but is do-able. It is such a tight fit that the fittings had to be ground down on all edges to clear the engine casing, starter, and pressure sensor. The adapter is held in place by the center sleeve which threads on the old oil filter mount through the adapter and is threaded for the new filter location. Has a larger mounting surface so you can use a larger filter.


Filter reinstalled on the adapter.


Oil cooler supply lines have been added to the adapter plate.


Cooler is mounted using the top radiator cover bolt location. Had the purchase a 6 by 30mm bolt. Used two fender washers, one at the bolt head on the other at the cover itself. Used an old 10mm by 1/4 drive socket for a spacer until I can get a piece of chromed tubing. Used Locktite on the bolt.


Here is the finished product. $120 dollars in the setup including the 90 degree angle adapters for the filter adapter. All other fittings came with the parts.

Earlier in the day I started the bike and let the run for 10 minutes, while sitting on the lift. Out side temp were 57 degree. Fan came on at 6 minutes and again every minute after. Several hours later, after the cooler was added, I let the bike idle for 15 minutes while on the lift. From cold engine to fan coming on was 9 minutes. Outside weather temp was 61 degree. Cooler was hot to the touch. Fan came on again at 14 minutes. Hard to tell by the pictures but the cooler only touches the radiator cover at the mounting area. Tubes clear by 1/2 inch.
I don't have an oil temp gauge and will have to wait to warmer weather to know the out come.

Just know if you purchase this cooler you need to remove the mounting bracket bolts and add Teflon tape to prevent leakage. Mine was on the bike and in operation when I found this out.

That is a clean looking install there, Chuck. well thought out and if you wanted to you can actually put a brass tee where the oil pressure sending unit is and put an oil temp gauge on your bike as well.

I like the way that particular cooler doesn't cover the radiator and send hotter air through it to the radiator.From what I have read dropping the temp on engine oil not only increases the engine cooling on these engines but cooler oil adds to the life expectancy of your stators since the engine oil cools them as well. I have seen a mod somewhere on here or in Gypsy's writings that reroutes the oil lines internally to spray oil directly on the stator in order to cool it more efficiently. I am going out on the limb with you and say you have got a good thing going on there. I'll give you an "atta boy" on that one. Good idea and good looking install.:smiley_th

It does look pretty clean. If you wanted you could even run stainless braided line to the cooler.

I think this is worthy of a sticky, Mike. I really do think it is an important issue that has been addressed well.

Thanks guys. I'm a hoping for the best. I did order a different cooler to start with,2002 Kawasaki 750 ZR H I'm thinking. It was as big as the VN 750 radiator. No real place to put it but I bet you could cool the engine without coolant.

I wish we could have gotten actual Engine oil temps and water temps before the mod was done, as to now after the mod is done, so we can base how much more cooling is actually taking place.

Why? It's on the engine, its cooling and its cooling oil. It met two of three of the qualifications for where it is. Highly unusual for this board. SMH

True oil temps would have to wait until summer weather to tell the real story. May add the gauge by then. Disconnect the cooler and do a bypass at the adapter, then put the cooler back in line. Easily done.:smiley_th

good plan... I have one more question for ya Chuck... what is going to pull the air through the oil cooler when you are stopped at a traffic light or stop sign?

I think the setup was well done but I am not sure I understand your comment of "important issue". Are you referring to oil cooling in general or in reference to our particular VN 750 model? Yes, some have had cooling issues but corrected the problem by fixing a situation that decreased the original cooling capacity of the bike (thermo, leaks, radiator flush, etc.). My point is that in the original design the cooling of our engines has been all that was needed. The stator is of a poor design and most will agree with that statement but so far that issue was all electrical. The recommended replacement stator offered by Tim has more windings I believe and does not change the cooling. If someone wants to add an oil cooler to their bike I am all for it although I did read in a previous thread on this issue that there is a possibility of causing a problem if the oil is cooled too far. Maybe that poster could elaborate on the possibilities a bit more here.

because its a Modification, and a project... and it doesn't have any technical information on how much cooler it made the engine run...YET... with the specs added, it could stay here...

The purpose of the project and builds forum is to document out of the oridnary modifications done to the VN750... IE larger fuel tanks, Vn900 seat swaps, ect... Earshave doesn't fit into the project and builds becausee you are only removing stock parts, and tuning the carbs... although my version of the earshave should be in the Project and builds since I built a custom air clearer housing and air intake,

I did read in a previous thread on this issue that there is a possibility of causing a problem if the oil is cooled too far. Maybe that poster could elaborate on the possibilities a bit more here.
I AM NOT that poster, but will add $0.02. It is much more harmful to run too cold oil.
