Hi folks, considering doing an earshave, but don't know what this coaster thing is, and where they go...

Coaster, is a metal plate to cover the hole where the reed box has been removed. You need two.

If you don't do coasters, the reed box itself can be capped or plugged.

The silver piece with the 5/8" hose clamped to it in this pic. This is the left side of the rear head, there's one just like it on the right side front head.

There are reed valves on each cylinder that open during deceleration (under vacuum).
This directs fresh air into the exhaust to burn off any unburned fuel.
This causes a popping noise under decel (assuming carb is properly tuned).

I posted a question about this step of the mod, and the consensus was it was only to remove the popping sound (or give a finger to the state of CA).
It has no effect on mpg or hp.

As far as location, there will be some vacuum hoses that attach to each cylinder.
Look for those.

Thanks for the info! Are these coasters available to buy somewhere, or do you usually make your own?

I made a set, but you can buy them. Look for 'vn750 reed plates' on ebay etc., price has gone up.

I hunted for some thicker aluminum, but the alum. stock they sell at hardware stores is thick enough since there's not much pressure from the port.

We had a member here making/selling them, but I haven't seen them in a while.

I'm fairly interested in making some coasters that are ribbed. I think I saw one person post a picture of some here once, and thought they were a good match with the engine. If there's interest, I could make a small batch instead of just a 1-off pair.
