Having pulled the needles out 4 or 5 times now to play with differnt amount of shims, I just now noticed the the needles have 4 steps a small circular clip can be placed on.

I seem to think that the stock needles were fixed and thats why the shims are needed.

If so, I am shimming a needle already set on the second step down. Up to three shims and 4th position and bike's mid range is still very bad. Thinking now that perhaps I have too much gas going in.

Need to borrow deep 18mm socket so I can pull plugs and look.

No. No toolkit, guy I work with has an 18mm deepwell, for as often as I need one, I borrow his.

What about the stock needles, any ideas?
