So I finally got around to two projects I've been meaning to do with my Vulcan since last year - re-jet the carbs and fabricate some straight-pipes to get rid of those big stock chrome cans on there.

I ear-shaved my Vulcan right when I got it, but didn't re-jet at the time. I finally decided to go with the two needle shims and the 142/42 jet combo that was suggested in the popular ear shave procedure post here. Man, I don't know why I didn't do that sooner. The motor is definitely running a lot better now, it was pretty lean before but now it's got some kick to it that it didn't have before.

Second was addressing the exhaust system. I've always hated the way the stock exhaust pipes looked (with the skinny-fat-skinny profile), and mine weren't in that great shape either. I didn't want to dish out any serious money on a V&H setup or some other slip-ons. I also wanted to get a very particular look out of it, and couldn't find anything existing out there, so I just bought some pipe adapters and cheap slant-cut tips, grabbed my welder, and made some myself. I ended up butt-welding the new pipes directly to the goat's belly because I couldn't find pipes the right size to slip over, or any clamps that I liked, and it was also a lot cheaper than buying the hardware. If I ever want to go back to the stock configuration then I can just chop them off.
Why bother keeping the goat's belly on there? Well... I wanted to keep the two-pipes on either side of the bike look, and figured it was the simplest way to keep an even amount of back pressure between the two pipes.

It feels like a completely new bike now, I'm loving it. Took it for a ride yesterday and it pulled real nice, I've definitely got a lot more power over all ranges. Sounds awesome too, but keeping the goat's belly on keeps it from being too obnoxiously loud.

I've got new shocks going on to replace the stock ones, but they're a set of sportster shocks and so the bushings aren't the right size. On a side note, if anyone knows where I can get some replacement bushings that will be wide enough to accommodate the sportster shocks while fitting on the Vulcan's shock studs, I'd be grateful.

Thanks a bunch, Gaz! It's been my labor of love for the past couple years.

I've got an '84 Honda Sabre in my garage that was supposed to be my next big project but I keep going back to this little guy, it's just a blast to ride.

I've stayed away from mine for a while cause she seems to like to piss me off. but the past few times I've ridden my brother's 800 boulevard makes me miss Melissa Fayhe
