Yesterday I was on a ride with a couple friends when at the end of our trip my coolant reservoir blew a hole in its side and shot coolant right on my leg. We were in Memphis and live in NE Arkansas two hour away. I was able to pull it off and patch it with electrical tape and had to pour water in the reservior a couple times but made it back home without it overheating again. My bike is a '86 model so its time to replace it anyways. I still like the bike but when I got it last year it had 18 years of non use and abuse but thats changing now.

I had the same thing happen a few days ago on my '93. I just got back from a ride and it erupted. I am still looking into it...

How old is your bike? UV Rays and temperature can wreak havok on plastic... The coolant reservoir is plastic. If your bike is older, it's possible that the years of exposure to the sun, and hot and cold temperatures had made the plastic brittle. As such, it would have been more liable to crack or blow out. This issue has me seriously considering the chrome Highway Hawk cover for it... or spraying a UV protectant on it.
